Workflow Design

ABOUT

We collaborated with the Trebellar team to craft the workflow system. Workflows serve to trigger automated actions upon specific conditions, such as notifying the Facilities team of a water leak or adjusting HVAC systems when temperature thresholds are exceeded. Throughout the design process, we focused on:
1. User Guidance: Ensuring a step-by-step creation process.
2. Inline Editing: Empowering users with inline editing capabilities akin to a CSV file.
3. Progressive Disclosure: Gradually revealing information on the side panel for each step to minimize cognitive load.

How might we create a system where automatic actions are triggered when specified conditions are met?

WORKFLOWS

CREATING WORKFLOW

1. At this location

User first selects which location should the workflow be active at. They can select from their own location or make a custom selection.

2. If this happens

Then they specify the condition that triggers the workflow. The trigger could be a temperature increase or drop, a water leak or an air quality change.

3. At this time

After that they select the time, which could be any time business hours or custom selection

4. Then do this

Lastly they select what should happen when the conditions are met. The options are notify, adjust or create an issue.

Step by Step Creation

To reduce cognitive load and simplify workflow creation, we divided the process into four main sections.

Information Hierarchy

We chose a side panel for users to select parameters while creating workflows, providing them with a clearer order of information.

Inline Editing

We provided users with shortcuts and relevant prompts to guide them in selecting or editing new parameters.
